Student attendance is an important aspect of educational achievement. The more a student attends the more likely they will make satisfactory progress.

Parents are asked to inform the college at the earliest opportunity by phone, e mail or by letter if their child is unable to attend college.

There are two types of absence authorised and unauthorised.

Examples of authorised absence could be:

  • Absence because of illness.
  • Absence for a medical or dental appointment.
  • Absence for participation in a day set aside for religious observation.
  • Absence for a holiday up to 10 days in any one college year (parents need to fill in a holiday form, obtained from the main reception).
  • Absence due to a family bereavement.
  • Absence for off-site activities.
  • Absence through official college exclusion.

Examples of unauthorised absence:

  • Absence for which there has been no parental explanation.
  • Absence for shopping, hair cuts, birthdays, minding younger children or minding the house etc.

Parents of students with unauthorised absences will be contacted by the college and the situation may be referred to the college ’s educational welfare officer.

Student attendance at John Ferneley is well above the national average and the rate of unauthorised absence at the college is well below the national average. College and national
statistics support this positive conclusion.
