Pupil attendance is an important aspect of educational achievement. The more a pupil attends the more likely they will make satisfactory progress.
Parents are asked to inform the school at the earliest opportunity by phone, e mail or by letter if their child is unable to attend school.
There are two types of absence authorised and unauthorised.
Examples of authorised absence could be:
- Absence because of illness.
- Absence for a medical or dental appointment.
- Absence for participation in a day set aside for religious observation.
- Absence for a holiday up to 10 days in any one school year (parents need to fill in a holiday form, obtained from the main reception).
- Absence due to a family bereavement.
- Absence for off-site activities.
- Absence through official school exclusion.
Examples of unauthorised absence:
- Absence for which there has been no parental explanation.
- Absence for shopping, hair cuts, birthdays, minding younger children or minding the house etc.
Parents of pupils with unauthorised absences will be contacted by the school and the situation may be referred to the schools educational welfare officer.
Pupil attendance at John Ferneley is well above the national average and the rate of unauthorised absence at the school is well below the national average. School and national statistics support this positive conclusion.
