Rotary Youth Speakers' Competition
On Saturday 29th November 2008 John Ferneley entered two teams in the Intermediate age category of the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaking competition (held at Melton Brooksby College). We had a year 7 team which consisted of Chloe Rowlatt (Chairperson), Emma Would (Speaker) and Evie Lakey (Proposer). We also entered a year 9 team made up of Aimee Barratt (Chairperson), Kimberly Anderson (Speaker) and Anthony Walker (Proposer).
Both teams excelled themselves in delivering thought-provoking and professional presentations which captured the attention of the parents, teacher, members of the local community and (most importantly!) the 3 judges who were in the audience.
The year 7 girls spoke about the issue of disability, raising some really poignant points and finished as runners up. The year 9 team spoke about books and reading and made, what some may consider a rather uninteresting topic, highly fascinating and very amusing in places! The year 9 team won the competition and are the 2008 Melton champions. They were presented with a trophy and individual medals (which they are allowed to keep).
Both speeches were excellent and both teams now progress to the next regional round of the competition to be held in January.
This competition is one of the hardest I’ve ever seen, with the main speaker having to speak for a full 6 minutes on their chosen topic without having the benefit of extensive notes/visual aides to guide them. All 6 Ferneley pupils should be extremely proud of their achievement and the hard work they have put in.
Good luck for the next round!
