At John Ferneley we believe that praise is a powerful way of promoting achievement.
The purpose of the 'excellence and merit award' scheme is to encourage pupils to produce high quality work. Good work is measured against the childs own ability in the judgement of the member of staff. These awards are given for good work, not for good behaviour.
Classroom teachers give merit awards. Excellence awards are given to pupils by the Head, or a Deputy on receipt of an excellence slip filled in by a member of staff. Merit and excellence stickers are placed in the log at the back of a pupils organiser and their award recorded on the tutor group chart displayed in the form room.
At the end of each term pupils with bronze, silver and gold merit and excellence certificates have their achievements celebrated at a whole year Award Ceremony.
A list of pupils achieving award certificates is posted on the web site.
