December 2009
Dear Parents
As we come to the end of an excellent term, our first as a 11 - 19 college, I have two important pieces of information to communicate. Firstly, we now have confirmation of the opening date for the new college. John Ferneley will open for all years on Monday 19th April. The week commencing Monday 12th April, the college will have an additional closure week to allow for staff and student induction. During this induction week Year 7 will only be required to attend college on Wednesday 14th April, Year 8 Thursday 15th April and Year 9 Friday 16th April. Year 10 will not be attending college that week as they will be following their work experience programme.
Progress in completing the building is going extraordinarily well and we anticipate few teething problems in transferring from the old to the new building.
Secondly, you will have noticed from the press that the Local Authority is proposing the closure of King Edward VII because of surplus pupil places in the town. If this decision is finally taken, John Ferneley College will have to accommodate additional students. Be reassured that we are well prepared for this possibility and anticipate that additional students will bring class sizes down. This will be of benefit to all students. A separate letter will be sent to you once the Local Authority commence this course of action.
During a period when the press seem to only focus on the problem of surplus places in the town, John Ferneley College continues to provide excellent opportunities for its students. At present we have a group of students led by Jon Beaver in India. They are having a wonderful time. Only last week we had an exceptionally successful Business and Enterprise event. This event was facilitated by our block timetable and supported by the Mars Cooperation. Over 20 of their employees provided input to the day.
Over the years John Ferneley has continued to build on its successful reputation. We are now in a position with our partners to realise a vision for education which will benefit every pupil in Melton.
