YEAR 10 CRICKET

League vs. Belvoir

After 2 defeats the team was desperate for a win and once again we had to draft in Iain Plowman at the last minute.  It was not a good start when Tom Glover was given out in a school game for the first time in over a year. He made 15 but then all the other batters came in and made runs. Tom Czuchaj made 21, Graham Rose 19 and Tom Bendle smashed 20 off 8 balls.  However pride of place has to go to Iain Plowman who made an unbeaten 27.  The only better who scored less than Tom Glover was Jack Winterton who still made 11 which is his highest score for the school.  All in all the team scored 119 an excellent score.

Belvoir started well and it took 5 overs to take the first wicket which came courtesy of a run out. Jake Lomas then got rewarded for his consistent line and length by taking 2 wickets in 3 balls.  Wickets for John Wallace and Tom Glover meant we took charge of the game and there was time for occasional bowlers Ryan Christie Tom Winterton and Jack Dolby to take their first wickets for the school.  Belvoir
finished on 71 which meant we had won comfortably. Next up King Edward
.

ATHLETICS

The English schools track and field cup took place at Saffron Lane in Leicester and produced the following results.  The Junior Boys were 6th out of 6 with notable performances coming from Luke Jane in the 800m and Michael La Barbera who was 1st in the 1500, despite thinking he had finished at the 1100m mark and given the other lad a 20 metre lead.

The Inter Boys were 6 out of 8 with notable performances coming from Jordan Forrester in the 100m, Lewis Wardle in the 200m and the Long Jump, Jack Brown who threw the discus 31 metre and last but not least Kieran Browne who threw the javelin a massive 39.58 metres.

The Junior Girls were 6 out of 7 with Lucy Palmer producing the top performance in the 1500m.  The Inter girls were 6 out of 8 with the top performances coming from the distance runners Charlotte Marsh 2:43 in the 800m and Lizzie Golland 5:27 in the 1500.  Well done to all those who took part. Next up Area sports at Grantham on Tuesday 8th June followed by County Sports on Saturday 12th June.

YEAR 7 CRICKET

League vs. Longfield lost by 70 runs

Not ideal preparation as we had to pick a squad before we were able to practice.  However thanks to Archie Herrick in particular we managed to get a team out.  Longfield however had quite a strong team and all their pairs batted well to get a total of 98.  Hayley Mitchell bowled very well and Billy Belshaw was the top wicket taker with three wickets.  George Sewell took a wicket with his first ball and also kept wicket well.  However when we batted we struggled and each pair lost quite a few wickets and as a consequence we only made 28 although Hayley Mitchell and George Sewell again batted well. So played one lost one but the whole team is confident we can do better next time out.

YEAR 9 CRICKET

League vs. Longfield lost by 9 wickets

This team were unbeaten last year and they approached the game full of confidence, especially when captain Joe Anderson made it back into the country after travel problems caused by Volcanic Ash.  However it soon became clear that Longfield meant business and they whistled through our top order taking 5 for 42 with Tom Wing getting the first quack quack of the season.  Joe Anderson (17) and James Parker (14) then joined together at the crease and gave us a chance by putting on an unbeaten partnership of 30. This gave us a total of 72.  We knew this was a low total and we were hoping to keep it tight early doors.  This did not happen and Longfield put on 27 from the first 4 overs.  Ferneley just never got in the game and Joe Anderson took our only wicket.  Poor fielding also stopped us taking a couple more wickets.  We play Longfield again in a fortnight and we will hopefully get our revenge then.

ROUNDERS

Year 9 vs. Belvoir and Longfield - Lost (6-4 ½) and Lost (8- 6 ½)

The girls made a really big effort for this match and considering this was their first week back they played brilliantly. We started off the batting against Belvoir and made a good strike. Our fielding in both games needs some work but on the whole the girls should be pleased with the performance. It was just as close against Longfield, and we were unlucky to be denied a couple of rounder’s due to some really good Longfield fielding. Well done to all girls involved and make sure you come to Rounders practice after school Fridays!

Year 7 vs. KE7 and Belvoir

Won (8- 4 ½) and won (11- 5)

The Year 7 girls had a stormer with their first games played! We had a great start with some super hits from all girls! We thrashed Belvoir 11-5 and deservedly so. The fielding was excellent and there were lots of great moments of team work. King Edward were up next and even though they were good at striking the ball, our fielding was so good it was rare that a rounder was scored. The strikes from the JF girls were spot on and another cracking win to add to the table! Well done girls!

GIRLS' RUGBY

Year 7 vs. Catmose (won 8-4) Longfield (Lost 6-8)

We travelled over to Catmose for this tournament and the girls were absolutely fantastic from the start. We arrived and had a chance to warm up and get our heads in the game. We went in against Longfield to start and some brilliant pace from Emerson Rose got us off to a very good start. Jordan Reek also proved to be pretty quick and was scoring tries all over the place! We were unfortunate to lose against Longfield, as we were just starting to get into the game.

In our next game against Catmose we were much more confident going in and started to look like a real tag rugby team! We won by 4 tries and all girls who took part thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done girls!

The Year 8 Girls' tag team also performed well beating Belvior and drawing with Longfield.

GIRLS HOCKEY

U15 vs. Catmose (lost 4-1) Uppingham (lost 8-0) Longfield (lost 1-0)

The score lines above in no way reflect the way the girls played this evening, or in fact how much they have improved. I think the whole of Uppingham heard their screams when Jess Herries scored a cracking goal against Catmose. We fought hard but unfortunately did not take our chances as well as Catmose. It was amazing to see how much the girls skills have improved playing against really good sides like Uppingham. The game against Longfield was a good clash, but our big town rivals took the lead not long from the end to claim the points. Even though the scores look quite bad, I am really proud of the way that they have played. Well done girls, keep it up!

The U-13 team did even better when they played beating Longfield and drawing with Uppingham

RUGBY

Despite brave performances against our local rivals Longfield we were beaten at all three age groups.  Thanks however to all parents who helped with transport on the evening.  Play off matches for all three age groups will take place next week.  Watch this space for details.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Year 7 County Final

Well, I have to be honest when I say that I did not expect the girls to work miracles having not played many games at all this season. However, we were absolutely brilliant on the day. As soon as we arrived Mr Guy (in shirt and tie) led the warm up and managed to get the girls really on the ball. Our first game in our group was against Manor and we made a really good start. Laura Gull and Lindsey Newman played brilliantly, making superb breaks in attack. We were the deserved winners of this game, winning 16-4.

We thought we had a break after this game, but unfortunately were asked to go straight on against the harder of the 2 teams in our league (the girls were exhausted after working so hard!). The game was against Samworth and we started off comfortably and led 6-0 at half time. We didn’t get ahead of ourselves and just carried on playing our game but in the second half, failed to sink as many baskets as we would have liked and Samworth were slowly creeping up on us…! It was extremely unfortunate (and may I add totally devastating) that we ended up losing this game by a basket in the final 30 seconds. The girls walked off the court upset and frustrated as we watched the final game of our league being played. We presumed that Samworth would win and therefore would go through to the final. However, the game was tight and we needed Manor to win! It looked unlikely as we entered the final 30 seconds of the game, with Samworth ahead by 1 basket (I actually went out of the sports hall at this point!) and it looked like Samworth were going through. By some miracle, Manor managed to score the shot of a lifetime and sink the basket so the game finished with both sides level pegging. The game then went into extra time and Manor won the game!

This meant that we went through on point’s difference. We were all very relieved because even though we had lost against Samworth, we were by far the best team in the league. As winners we went through and played the winning team from the other group, De Lisle. It was a closely contested match but after all the excitement, we just couldn’t get back into the game! Unfortunately we lost by 3 baskets but the girls had a storming afternoon and came 2nd in the County! Not bad for a days work! Well done to all who took part, it was fantastic!

CROSS COUNTRY

The county relays at Shepshed were the final race of the season and it was a much depleted team we took to Shepshed.  Some runners were unable to take part due to running in a London Mini Marathon trial the next day.

The Year 7 boys only had two runners which was a real pity as Oliver Hurst and Linden Brewster ran their hearts out and they were in third place.  So with another couple of runners we could have medalled in this race.  The Year 7 girls’ team with Sophie Jones, Laura Gull and guests Lucy Ball and Alice Hack came 5th. Sophie in particular having a real strong run.  The Year 8 boys were hopeful of a medal and Joel Thompson, Alex Lynott, Josh Wilson, Matt Pope and James Scatchard all ran really well and narrowly missed out finishing 4th.

This left the older students and it looked like they would not have a team when only regular runner Joe Pope and debutante Rhys Coleman were going to turn up.  However Jonny Jones who was going to be watching his sister volunteered to run so the team could take part.  The boys finished 5th and both Rhys Coleman and Jonny ran really well.

Last but not least the inter girls who were without Lizzie Golland due to the mini marathon trial but Lucy Palmer (from Year 7) stepped into the team.  Lottie Marsh and Alice Newton ran well on their legs to put the team in second place and Lucy maintained this position to give the girls a silver medal.  Well done to everyone who ran on the day and everyone who has run this year.

YEAR 10 RUGBY

League vs. Belvior won 45-0 Callum Smith 2 tries; Jack Brown 2 tries Ryan Christie and Lewis Wardle.

What a great performance from the Year 10s who took control from start to finish.  It looked liked we had taken an early lead when Jack Brown crossed the try line but he kept on running over the dead ball line.  However he soon made up for it by scoring tries and dominating play in the loose.  Callum Smith also had a really good game and linked up on several occasions with Ryan Christie who inspired the team from scrum half.  Jack Buckley had an excellent game leading the forwards and Lewis Wardle had 2 great runs with the ball one of which resulted in a try.  Well done lads a great team effort.

SPORTS PRESENTATION EVENING

UNTIL WE MOVE INTO THE NEW SCHOOL AT EASTER I WILL NOT KNOW WHAT FORM THE SPORTS PRESENTATION EVENING WILL TAKE.  AT THE PRESENT TIME ANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE TROPHIES CAN KEEP HOLD OF THEM UNTIL I LET YOU KNOW OTHERWISE.

YEAR 9 B BASKETBALL

Friendly vs. Casterton Lost 44-20 Dan Gasgoine 12 pts, James Birch, Dan Challis, Jordan Rawlings and Sean Webb.

A really good game and apart from the third quarter we matched Casterton all the way.  The improvement in this team is unbelievable and they all really enjoy playing Basketball.  Dan Gasgoine had a really good game and he was backed up well by Luke Spiby and Dan Challis.  The Man City contingent (James and Jordan) played as well as their team did against Chelsea and Sean Webb never stopped smiling.  Alex Cort completed the squad.  Thanks to Mr Challis for helping with transport.

YEAR 9 BASKETBALL

County Finals 3rd

The team turned up full of confidence but we found out we were in the toughest group and our hardest game was first up against Rushey Mead.  After a good start we drifted out of the game and lost by about 8.  This was a pity as it meant we now had little chance of making the final.  The lads played really well in their next three games winning comfortably against Gartree, Castle Donnington and Hastings.  This meant we had to play Casterton in the third place play off.  Once again we won this comfortably.  All in all the team played really well and if we had not played Rushey Mead in the first game we could have made the final.  James Chester was his normal dominate self but special mention needs to be made of Joe Anderson and Josh Gallagher. Other members of the squad Lewis Iron, Alex Cort, Evan Cooper, Rhys Jowett, Jordan Wilson and Tom Shing.

Leicestershire 9-a-side Cup v Ibstock Won 4-0

The less said about the first half of this match the better! We dominated from the start but just couldn’t seem to score!!! Connie Ingall and Anya Elliot between them started to get frustrated and just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. However, after a half time team talk and a bit of a boost, we started to regain composure and played some very good football. A great throw from Abbie Geeson led to a goal by Connie Ingall (well done Charlotte Tait who left it to Connie because she was offside!) and we were on our way. A corker from Anya Elliot and another goal from Connie put us 3 ahead before Jordan Reek popped in the final 4th goal of the afternoon. A cracking result which puts us in the semi-final against either Manor or Kibworth! Thanks again to parents for coming all the way across to Ibstock to watch again!

YEAR 9 BOYS' RUGBY

A mass withdrawal on the day of the game meant that the game almost had to be cancelled.  However Joe Anderson, Tom Wing and Niall Kennedy stepped up to the plate and we had an 8 a side game against Belvior.  The team struggled at first and we were soon 15 -0 down. However we started playing some good stuff and scored tries through Tom Wing, Joe Anderson and Ed Hatcher.  Joe converted a couple of these to make the score 24-19.  We were very unlucky in the last attack of the game as a pass from Arron Wootton just went behind Joe Anderson.  It was a great effort by the lads and Ed Hatcher can be very pleased with the way he lead the side.  Other players Josh Hayward, Rhys Jowett and Rory Hardisty

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

County Final @ Beauchamp College. Result: 5th place.

Well done to all girls who played today. The standard was really high, especially in the league we were drawn in. Out of the 10 teams, our league we were placed in was very tough with the likes of old rivals Castle Donington popping up! Our first game against Hamilton should have been a walkover (on our part) but we took time to get into the game and it was a real shame that we lost the game by 2 baskets. We definitely dominated and deserved the win.

Our next game against Lutterworth was pretty straightforward, with the Emilia Herries taking full advantage of the weak defence and scoring lay ups from all angles. Next up was Castle Donington, and by this point we were switched on and ready to go. We gave them a real fright in the first 12 minutes, with only 2 points in it. Abbie Gesson and Katherine Lovegrove worked really hard to not let anything get past them and some lovely play from Anya Elliot put us within touching distance of the win. Unfortunately it was not quite enough and Castle Donington won the game and went on to win the tournament against Jonny North. However, we had to face Lutterworth for the 5th place final, which we won comfortably. Well done to all girls who took part!

U13 @ Uppingham

This was a fantastic fixture to watch and it was so good to see girls who had really stood out in their PE lessons come forward and represent their school, some for the first time. We started off well against Catmose, with some good play in the middle from Sophie Lecoyte and some fantastic saves from Kayleigh Martin really keeping us in the game. Unfortunately we lost the game 2-0 but it was a promising start.

Next up was Uppingham, who are reknowned for their very strong ability at Hockey. They won 6-0 but again, there were some fantastic saves from Kayleigh Martin and defence from Katherine Lovegrove and Lydia Farmer was brilliant. Our best game was definitely against Longfield where we drew 0-0, but we really started to use the space a lot better and control the ball around the pitch. We had some good shots on goal but unfortunately their keeper was strong and saved everything!

It was a really good evening overall where all girls showed much promise. Well done girls, next match on the 10th March!

YEAR 8 CRICKET

I know it seems far too cold for the cricket season but we started with an indoor competition against local rivals Belvior, Longfield and King Edward.  Unfortunately we did not get much training time so we went in a little bit rusty and as a result lost two games in a row to go out of the competition.  Henry Newton batted well in both games but it was not enough to take us to victory.  We were not consistent enough with our bowling although Kieran Sim managed to turn a few a la Graham Swann.  The U-15 qualifying competition was held at Longfield and we managed to win one and lose two.  The lads were disappointed about this as they were hoping to go through.  When I spoke to captain Tom Glover he felt the fielding had let them down.

U-13 HOCKEY

I am not going to underplay this it was absolutely freezing and we had to play the two best teams Casterton and Catmose.  We were not helped by our regular Goalie Ben Challis being unable to play due to dental surgery.  Ellis Kiddell stepped in and did a good job but he was not able to prevent a 6-0 and a 7-0 defeat.  It was not all bad news though, Ryan Brooks showed some silky skills up front and he was supported well by Josh Leach.  In the first game Ryce Beattie played well until Hypothermia set in and I thought we were going to have to rush him to hospital. Well done lads though, you have done well at the hockey considering you were up against Year 8 teams.  Other team members Kade Attewell, Leighton Chapman and Sam Williamson.

SPORTS HALL ATHLETICS

The week finished well as we dominated this competition and won all 4 age groups Year 7 and 8 Boys and Girls.  Report to follow next week well done to all those who took part.

YEAR 10 FUTSAL

The girls’ team came and saw and conquered winning both their games easily against Longfield and King Edward.  Lauren Smith and Hannah Pattison were dominating up front and Alice Newton also played well in defence alongside Conna Jones.  Jessica Baker completed the team with a superb performance in goal.

The boys did well in their first game beating Longfield easily. The second game against King Edward saw them play some brilliant football despite not having Bradley Smith.  A superb team goal saw us take a 3-0 lead with 4 minutes left.  However King Edward would not give up and they managed to score 4 times to clinch a victory.  King Edward had lost to Uppingham so we still had a chance.  Again the team played well to beat Uppingham 2-1 although Joe Pope was sure his shot had crossed the line to give us a 3-1 victory.  This turned out to be crucial as we lost out by one goal with King Edward taking the title.  Other members of the boys’ squad Jack Dolby, Tom Bendle, Tom Czuchaj, Mac Irish and Ollie Riddell.

U-15 –HOCKEY

Despite not being able to fit a training session in a mixture of Year 9s and 10s took to the first stage of the hockey competition at King Edward.  The team played well in their first game against Belvior with George Edwards scoring a good equaliser after Belvior had eventually managed to get a shot past Liam Cliffe.  Unbelievably Belvior won the game with a shot on the final whistle.

The team were very nervous about the second game against Longfield as everyone felt they were a better team than Belvior.  However George Edwards took control of midfield with good support from Jack and Tom Winterton in defence and Luke Roberts who ran his heart out up front.  Longfield scored first but we equalised again through George Edwards.  Liam Cliffe made some good saves again and we held out to draw the second game.  Well done lads the next stage of the competition is on the 10th February.  Other members of the squad Jake Buckley, Liam Mabbott and Anthony Walker.

YEAR 9 FUTSAL

The boys' team came full of confidence as they were the league champions but they soon learned that Futsal was a different game and they were beaten 3-0 by a Longfield team who quite simply played better on the night.  The second game against Uppingham saw a much better performance with Jack Hall and Jake Robson pulling the strings in a 3-2 win.  However the team was reliant on Iain Plowman who made a great save towards the end of the game.  In their last game against King Edward the team caught fire and with Lewis Iron pulling the strings in midfield we absolutely took them to the cleaners winning 11-0.  This was quite an achievement in a 10 minute game.  Jamie Heinzman and Ryan Kitt Geraghty  were other members of the squad which finished second.

The girls' team were represented by the Year 8 girls who were very unlucky to lose 1—0 in their first game against King Edward.  Connie Ingall scored a good goal against Longfield which looked like it would be enough for a 1-0 win until Longfield hit a screamer in the last seconds.  This meant the girls finished 3 out of 3 but considering they were up against Year 9s this was not a bad achievement.

U13 –HOCKEY

After putting out a note on Fronter some very brave Year 7 lads volunteered to represent Ferneley in an U-13 Hockey competition at King Edward.  On a freezing cold night the lads put in two creditable performances losing 3-0 to King Edward and 2-0 to Longfield.  However Ben Challis did really well in his first ever game in goal and Ryce Beattie also did well enough to be asked for trials with Melton Hockey Club.  The lads all seemed to enjoy the experience and they were all keen to represent Ferneley again in a couple of weeks.

CROSS COUNTRY

The last individual race of the season saw a slightly under strength Ferneley team make one more effort to gain some more medals.  We struck gold in the first race when Lucy Palmer ran a brilliant race to win comfortably and become County Champion.  She is the first County Champion from John Ferneley for several years, well done Lucy.  Lucy was backed up by Sophie Jones who ran a great race to finish 26th.

At one point it looked as though we were going to do the double at Year 7 level when Luke Jane took an early lead but unfortunately he just slipped back to finish 4th.  Luke showed great sportsmanship to let one of his fellow front runners know that he was going the wrong way. Well done Luke.  Also in the Year 7 race Oliver Hurst finished 38th and Charlie Ward was 42nd.  Ellis Kiddell was hoping for a good performance as he has been improving in training.  However he fell awkwardly early on in the race and he basically limped round the course but he never gave up.

The Year 8 Boys had their usual strong turn out and it might be enough to get them a medal.  James Scatchard was first back in 33rd and was very closely followed by the rest of the squad; Matt Pope in 36th, Alex Lynott in 38th, Joel Thompson in 40th and Tyron Cotterill in 45th.

The junior girls saw Lucy Golland turn in her regular top 20 performance coming 18th and the team was completed by two runners who never give up and always complete the course.  Charlotte Seagrave in 47th and Lucy Ball in 48th.

The inter girls were hampered by the fact that Alice Newton was unable to run because of a hamstring injury but Lottie Marsh and Lizzie Golland continued their good form which has lead to them being selected by Leicestershire.  Lottie Marsh came 6th and Lizzie Golland came 12th.  Despite Brad Smith not being able to run, the inter Boys team still turned in a good performance with Joe Pope 13th, Curtis Cotterill 17th and Ryan McAuley 22nd.  This will hopefully be enough for a team medal.
