john ferneley high school

Every pupil who attends John Ferneley is special and we aim to tailor the learning experience to the needs of individual pupils. However, some pupils have specific needs either because they have learning difficulties or because they have particular gifts. These pupils are given special attention. For pupils with learning difficulties this takes the form of:

  • Individual learning plans.

  • Extra support in the classroom.

  • Small group tuition.

Gifted pupils will be placed in one of two high flying groups in English, mathematics, science and French from Year 7 onwards. These groups are given special extension exercises in order to stretch them academically. In this way the most gifted students as well as our most able pupils are challenged to reach their full potential.

Gifted pupils can also be offered the opportunity to participate in regional summer camps to further develop their particular skills. Places on these camps are unfortunately limited.

Students with learning difficulties as well as gifted pupils are identified by staff and the parents of these pupils are contacted. The progress of these pupils is carefully monitored by the school’s Special Education Needs Coordinator, Sandra Hall and her team.
